Self-Care Sunday- Vol. 1
My anxiety makes me incredibly vain and forces me to pay an absurd amount of attention to my looks.
"What will people think?"
"Ew. You are wearing that?"
"What if I'm over or under dressed?"
Some days this anxiety is paralyzing and I have such a hard time getting dressed.
However, usually, when it comes to my looks my depression is usually a louder guiding force in my hesitations and decisions.
"You are so fat."
"You are so super ugly."
"No one finds you attractive so why are you even trying."
Not to mention that my depression makes me so physically tired I literally do not have the energy to spend a large amount of time primping. Because I spend so little time, if any, on my beauty routine, the few products that I do use need to be really effective at creating my desired look effortlessly. It's interesting that I care so little about taking care of my self while at the same time being 100% obsessed with the beauty industry and a former beauty blogger. Just shows you how depression helps to make you lose interest in things you once loved. There was a time when I was a teenager and in my early 20's where I really took up some time getting ready. Hair, make-up, exfoliate, self-tan (I am vampire pale thanks to my Irish genes.) moisturize, 10-step skincare routine. But no more. I still buy beauty products with the same excitement and frequency as the younger me did, I just can't be bothered to use them.
Anyway....got off topic there.
In my very first Self-Care Sunday post I am going to talk about hair. Doing my hair has to be my least favorite part of my beauty routine. I hate my hair, hate it's texture and am never satisfied with how it turns out. It's flat and lifeless with a slight wave. Not a gorgeous Victoria's Secret model wave full of bounce and shine. No. My hair's wave bears a stronger resemblance to Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos in the movie Monster. Think dull, lifeless, early nineties serial killer. That's my hair. I wash it and air dry it. I don't have the patience for anything else.
I have searched for years for a magical product that will enable me to continue my lazy hair routine but with stunning results. For years I had been unsuccessful. Until about a year ago when I met Captain Blankenship.
The brand's founder Jane Blankenship wanted to "create organic beauty products that create a direct link with nature." Captain Blankenship's products are just beautiful. They smell amazing, and the ones that I have used were very effective and I can't live my life without them. Their packaging is so pretty and makes each product look like the most special treasure you could ever find. Some fun and amazing facts about Captain Blankenship:
Another shortcut that I love and probably go way too many consecutive days in a row performing is dry shampoo. Dry shampoo has been my best friend for years. Adds volume to oily, lifeless hair and refreshes stinky unwashed hair. If you have never tried dry shampoo you really should give it a shot! Start with this one from Captain Blankenship. Their Mermaid Dry shampoo is THE BEST. Instead of using talc, the dry shampoo is formulated using organic arrow root powder which easily eliminates oil and adds just the right amount of volume. Aluminum-free baking soda also absorbs oil and infuses your hair with freshness. The powder is scented with geranium and palmarosa essential oils which leaves your hair smelling like you are someone who washes their hair more than once every three days. It was a little tricky to use the container at first. Most of the dry shampoos I have used come in aerosol containers. Captain Blankenship's comes in a shaker bottle. Similar to salt or baby powder. It didnt take long to get the hang of it and there is no way I could go back to aerosol again. The other amazing thing about this dry shampoo is that it lasts FOREVER. I have had my current bottle for at least six months. Love it!!

I am obsessed with Captain Blankenship's Golden Waves Sea Salt Shimmer Spray. DO NOT be alarmed by the word "shimmer'. I was a bit nervous when I ordered it but I promise you that you can barely see the shimmer once it is in your hair. The gold mica just helps your hair to look shiny. Made with organic sea salt to add volume and texture and aloe vera to gently add lightweight moisture this spray is 100% what I have been searching for. It really works! I spray it onto damp hair and let it air dry and BOOM, gorgeous beachy hair. It's the most wonderful miracle. As an added bonus it works as a hair refresher on dry hair because it has a lovely, fresh scent thanks to rose and geranium essential oils. And it doesn't make your hair crunchy regardless of if you use it on wet or dry hair. That's so important. So finding the ultimate trifecta of creates mounds of volume, smells amazing and is from a company who shares my views makes Captain Blankenship's Sea Salt Shimmer Spray a real winner for me.

I just want to say that I AM NOT being paid by Captain Blankenship to say these things. I literally love the brand and their products and want to share the wealth. They are well worth your time.
