Where Do Presidential Candidates Stand On Mental Health Issues

I think it is fair to say that shit is bananas right now. Regardless of what side of the aisle you are on, our current political climate, the dizzying new cycle and extreme feelings on both sides can be exhausting.

But, we are heading towards a Presidential election in 2020, and it is shaping up to be a doozy. Stakes are high. Tensions are even higher. And, has anyone noticed that the list of candidates is super long? It all feels very overwhelming. Where do all of these candidates stand on the issues that matter to you? There are so many candidates that it truly feels like it would take ages to research every single one and their stance on things. While I can't help you figure everything out, I did do a little research for you. I went through each candidate and figured out where they stand on mental health issues. Then, I put all of my findings into a neat little list. It ended up being super long, so I am going to break it up into parties. I will post the Democrats separate from the Republicans for ease of reading and clarity. I tried to keep the information about each candidate as short as possible. If I couldn't find anything specifically about mental health care, I just reviewed their general health care views.

Hopefully these posts will inspire you to dig deeper into your favorite candidate to help you make an educated decision in November 2020.

Mental health is a huge issue in the United States and should not be overlooked by any politician. All Americans should be able to access quality mental health care when they need it, at an affordable cost. They should not be intimidated by stigma, fear of being institutionalized, penalized for having a mental health condition or scared of the skyrocketing costs of care. We are the richest country in the world. We are lucky enough to have an incredible amount of freedom. So why is it that our country is so shit at mental health care?

In another post this week, I talk about how much it actually costs for me to treat my mental health condition. Without health insurance there is absolutely no way that I would be able to access treatment of any kind. With insurance I am barely able to access the treatment that I need. The cost is still overwhelming. Health insurance is really important, but there is so much room for improvement.

Having access to affordable mental health care should be a priority for every American. Unfortunately, not everyone views it that way.

What are your thoughts on our current mental health care situation? How are you looking to your favorite candidate to change things? Who is looking good to you? Why? Starting a conversation around mental health brings us one step closer to ending the stigma that hangs over all mental health conditions.
