DIY Mental Health Box

Recently, I was searching the Internet for a ready-made mental health or self-care box to send to someone who is currently going through some things. After spending literally two days looking, I accepted defeat and decided to just make one myself.

Making your own mental health/self-care box is a great gift, but it can also come in really handy when managing your own mental health and well-being. If you collect a bunch of self-care items and put them into a box, practicing self-care becomes less overwhelming, and takes the guesswork out of how to care for yourself. Remember, self-care isn't selfish. It is essential to your overall health and well-being.

When thinking about what items you want to place in your box, consider all of the different types of self-care.

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • Sensory
  • Social
Here are some examples of things you could include from each category:

Physical:
bubble bath, Epsom salts, face or body oil, massage ball, facial roller, face mask, aromatherapy oils and sprays.

Emotional:
journal and pen, high-quality tissues with lotion, affirmation books or cards

Spiritual:
meditation music or sounds, gratitude journal and pen, crystals, incense, smudge stick, healing or charged candles.

Sensory:
aromatherapy diffuser, coloring book with colored pencils, stuffed friend, a warm, cozy blanket, a weighted blanket, tea, chocolates, headphones or speakers for music.

Social:
beautiful stationary, thank you cards, pen, stamps, emergency numbers like the Suicide Prevention Hotline or NAMI helpline.

Frequently treating yourself to new items for your box will encourage you to practice self-care more often.

When selecting your box, really get creative. A plain cardboard box would do just fine, but it will be much more satisfying to use a visually stunning box to keep your items in.

If you just aren't feeling up to the task of making your own box, don't worry. There are a lot of companies that offer monthly subscription boxes so you never have to worry about running low on self-care supplies. Thrive Wise is a great option. I explain more about them in this post. Thera Box is one that I have personally tried in the past and really loved it.

Here are some other options:

Pause and Unwind
Listen-Color-Relax

Having a mental health/self-care box is such a great gift to give to someone else or keep for yourself. You can use it in your daily life or in emergencies when you really need some relief. It simplifies the ritual into something that is easy and enjoyable to do.
