National Eating Disorders Awareness Week
The National Eating Disorders Association's (NEDA's) National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is the largest and best-known eating disorders outreach effort in the country. In 2019, NEDAwareness week encouraged you to Come As You Are by highlighting NEDA's movement toward inclusivity in the greater eating disorder community. The goal of the campaign was to emphasize that no matter your body shape, weight, race, gender, ability, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or your stage of body acceptance and eating disorder recovery, your story is valid and deserves to be heard.
NEDA is working hard to improve the public understanding of eating disorders and their causes, dangers and treatments and to empower everyone to reduce risk factors and join prevention efforts.
For 2020 NEDA is building off of last year's success and continued importance and relevance. This year's theme is Come As You Are: Hindsight is 20/20, and they are encouraging you to reflect on the positive steps that you have taken towards accepting yourself and others. NEDAwareness week is being celebrated the week of February 24-March 1, 2020 and NEDA wants you to celebrate by embracing this year's theme and sharing your story to continue the conversation and prioritize inclusivity.
You can join the conversation the week of February 24-March 1 2020 by sharing your story, busting myths, or help to point others towards resources and support. Be sure to use the hashtags #NEDAwareness and #ComeAsYouAre and follow NEDA on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, YouTube and LinkedIn.
You can also visit their website for more information. There you will also find shareable graphics that you can use, sample social media messages, and a photo overlay to add to your social media profile picture.
So join in and speak out. Eating disorders are a serious mental health issue and we should all support NEDA's effort because they are working hard to end the stigma.
If you live with an eating disorder and need help or support, please contact NEDA's Crisis Text Line by texting "NEDA" to 741741.
In this post, I talk a little about eating disorders, the different kinds, symptoms and give resources for support and treatment.
