National Alcohol Screening Day

National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) first launched in 1999 by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The goal of the initiative is to increase public awareness that alcohol abuse and alcoholism are recognized, treatable disorders.

This year, NASD is on Tuesday April 7, 2020. On this day, people are encouraged to visit any screening center that can be found across the United States. You can search for screening centers near you by doing a quick Google search. Those who visit can complete a written self-assessment about their alcohol use then have a health care professional tailor advice using the results of the assessment.

NASD is meant to help people consider healthier drinking habits and connect with those with more serious alcohol use issues with resources that can help them.

If you can't find a screening center near you, you can visit alcoholscreening.org for additional information on healthy drinking habits and to take an alcohol screening quiz. There, you can also take advantage of a free text messaging intervention to help moderate your drinking.

You can participate on social media by using #NationalAlcoholScreeningDay when sharing or searching on social media.
